Welcome to Y1EJ

Spring Term 1

We hope you have had a lovely Christmas and would like to wish you a Happy New Year! We are Miss Jarvis (Class Teacher) and Miss Brady (Teaching Assistant).

Our topic for this half term is called ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers.’ The children will be talking and writing about animals. This topic has a strong focus on Art and Design, so they will also be making imaginary animals and animal prints etc. Our Science topic is ‘Animals Including Humans,’ which links to our topic.

We will begin this term by looking at ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea.’ We will look at what makes interesting and exciting stories and then we will be writing our own. You can help your child by sharing lots of fun stories and thinking of adjectives to describe characters’ appearance and feelings.

We have two PE sessions each week. On Mondays we have ball skills with our sports coach, Gavin. Children do not get changed for this session but they will need a pair of trainers. On Friday we have gymnastics, dance or games with Miss Jarvis. Your child should have a full PE kit for this lesson. Our school PE kit is a blue polo shirt, shorts and pumps. Please make sure that your child’s PE kit is labeled.

Your child has the opportunity to read every day in the class reading area. They also have Guided Reading sessions in order to accelerate their reading ability and enjoyment of books. Their book is changed once a week and they should bring their book to school every day. Please ensure your child has a book bag so they can take their books home. You can aid your child in this process by reading and sharing books with them regularly.

It is an exciting time in Key Stage 1 as Year 1 and Year 2 are undertaking the Singapore approach to maths lessons. The Singapore approach has been proven to deepen children’s understanding of maths concepts and increase attainment. Please help your child at home by counting to 100 (forwards and backwards) from any number, along with doubling and halving numbers to 20 and learning number bonds to 20.

The children will continue to have maths and English homework on a Friday which will be due in on the following Wednesday. Please ensure your child completes their homework as it is designed to consolidate the learning they have done in class. There are also extra homework activities (see sheet in front of homework books) which allow the children to collect more points. The class with the most points at the end of the term will win a prize!
