Welcome to Y4AR/HS

Summer 1 2017

Hello again from Miss Stancliffe, Mrs Roberts and Mr. Wigg,

We have been so busy this term and have lots of exciting things to tell you about. Before Easter we were looking at Leif Erikson and basing all of our topic work around Viking history and adventures. We worked as a class to complete a variety of missions which challenged our mental, physical and team working skills. It’s been fantastic! Some of the highlights included constructing our own Viking Long-ships, writing our own myths about Norse gods like Thor and Loki, mapping our own Viking settlements and learning about Viking battles and weapons. Now that we’re in the summer term we’re looking at a new adventurer: writer and explorer Kira Salak.

Last term also included Science Week which was a fantastic opportunity for children and staff in Year 4 to try science based activities we had never done before. From growing crystals to handling tarantulas, mixing our own sherbet to making realistic (and disgusting!) models of the digestive system, every member of our class put in a fantastic effort and demonstrated a huge array of skills and knowledge. It was a lot of fun!

We’re also pleased to inform you that the class has made excellent progress in swimming and have been enjoying some free play sessions as a result – let’s keep up the good work all the way through to the summer holidays now.

Reminders:

  • Homework will be given out every Friday and is due back by the following Wednesday.  The children are welcome to send it back early, on the Monday or Tuesday, if they wish.  The extra, optional activities will earn extra rewards for the class so please have a go at these if you get chance.  Please ask your child to speak to us as soon as possible if they need any help with their homework.

  • Swimming is still every Tuesday and outdoor PE is still every Thursday.

  • All children are encouraged to have a water bottle in school.  However, please ensure they do only contain water (and not juice, for example).  The bottles are kept in the classroom and the children can have a drink when they need to.  They need to take them home regularly for a wash as we do not wash out the bottles in school.

  • All Year 4 children should now be writing using joined handwriting, or at least with some letters and words which are joined.  If your child is not yet joining up, please practise with them and encourage them to do any writing in this style.

If you have anything you would like to mention or talk to us about, please do come and see Mr Wigg, Miss Stancliffe or myself at the door at home time.
